Ron Ball, SCC President from 2017 to 2021 reported at the 2021 AGM ..
In 2018, I presented an extensive document to the County about our long standing problems with the ice and the building (the slab had been poured with considerable slope to allow for possible summer livestock shows - which never happened). Now, thanks to a lot of hard work by your executive and many, many meetings with the County and the contractor we have a completely new floor for our ice surface. The drainage around the building and under the slab was improved and a warm floor was installed above the soil to prevent future freezing and heaving of the concrete surface. Many other improvements were also made, including: new windows, lights, carpet, flooring, paint, cabinetry, air handling system over the ice and brine control valves. Considerable thanks are due to *Lorne Barker*, ice technician, for his constant oversight of the construction to ensure that we got the best possible results. The curling stones were sent out to be re-conditioned, with re-profiled striking bands and running surfaces re-ground. Along with a more level ice surface, the rocks are running faster and truer.
Be sure to come to try our newly renovated Club facilities.
On November 10th, 1976, Strathcona Curling club, locally also known as the Fultonvale Curling Club, was incorporated and started curling at its present location at the Strathcona Olympiette Centre. In the beginning and still to this day the club was very much a draw for local residents to gather and enjoy an afternoon or evening out.
The first board of directors included, - President: George Harcus -Secretary: Allen Dahlen - Treasurer: James Kaulbach - Draw Master: Bob Reid - Entertainment Chairman: Vic Paananen
Diane Farquahar, one of the first curlers at the club, remembers fondly…
I remember attending an organizing meeting to start a curling club at Fultonvale in 1975-76. I fondly remember discussing the wish for a daytime league. If only babysitting was available. I was a new mom of a 2 year old, building our 1st home in a new neighborhood and meeting our new neighbors. I remember Ethel Reid asking her daughter, Karen Sass to entertain/babysit our children while we curled. The Mom's donated toys, games, & craft supplies and we organized the Moms to provide snacks for all the kids. I remember drawing names "out of 4 hats" to make teams. - Skips - those that are curling - Thirds - those that have curled recently - Seconds - those that knew how to curl/play the game.... - Leads - beginners
Wayne Sundquist, also an original curler at the club, remembers…
I started when the Club first put in the ice and have never missed a year since.
I think the most memorable events were when we had a very active club and had filled bonspiels. The most interesting bonspiels were when we had women bonspiels and I was working in the bar. It seemed that every lady had $20.00 to spend on booze and they knew how to have a good time. Especially when the men put on a fashion show wearing ladies clothing. These where a real hoot!! I looked after the bar starting Sept. 28, 2004 and continued for 7 years until Brian Volk volunteered to take over.
I started the Wednesday afternoon Seniors curling in Oct. 2004. Within 2 years it filled out to 32 players and has stayed that way until present.
